Drum Grandly (Mahoratuek Drum) is an early civilization of the Southeast region before acquiring culture from China and India. It represents the wisdom, artistic talent, and technology of Southeast Asia 3,000 years ago. Mahoratuek is not a pure Thai word, but it is an ancient word of foreign countries and has become distorted. In early Thai documents such as Tribhum, it is called Mahoratuek, but in the Law of the Monarch, it is called Ratuek. Mahoratuek is a Thai music instrument classified as a drum made of an alloy called bronze (Bronze), in the gong type. There are small frog sculptures decorated on the edge of the drum skin. Some people classified Mahoratuek as a gong while Chinese documents called a copper drum.
There are 4 Mahorateuk drums found in Mukdahan province.
1. Mahoratuek drum that was excavated in front of the post office in Kham Cha-i District, Mukdahan.
2. Mahoratuek drum at Wat Matchimawat, Don Tan District. It is the largest Mahoratuek drum in Thailand
3. Mahoratuek drum at Ban Dong Yang, Ban Kho subdistrict, Kham Cha-i district.
4. Mahoratuek drum that was found in Mueang Mukdahan district.
The history of Klong Thong(Golden Drum) (Mahoratuek) at Don Tan District, Mukdahan. On Thursday, October 6, 1938, there were 3 villagers including 1.Mr. Lek Paripurana 2.Mr.Pang Srilasak 3.Mr.Lab Srilasak, skilled in fishing in the Mekong River. On that day, they went fishing along the Mekong River as usual, while passing Wat Woen Chai Mongkhol, Don Tan District, opposite Ban Na Tham Lao People's Democratic Republic, and around the bank that was eroded, they found a little metal slightly emerged from the ground. The three fishermen dig it up and washed it thoroughly, they finally found that it was a golden drum(Klong Thong). The drum was 86 centimeters wide, 90 centimeters in diameter, and the length of the drum from head to tail was 66 centimeters, it was the largest Mahoratuek Drum in Thailand. It significantly was a drum made of at least three alloys including copper, tin, and lead, collectively known as bronze. There are sculptures shaped like frogs on the skin of the drum and like a 14-pointed sun. Archaeologists "Toveme" of Vietnam assumed that it was the sculpture of a boat of spirit, an ancient culture of Dong Song in northern Vietnam, about 3,000 years old. The casted bronze of golden drum was beneficial for use in war, ritual sacrifices, driving out beasts, or even for entertainment purposes, etc. After villagers brought the golden drum to Wat Matchimawat (Wat Klang), people always came to see the golden drum. When there was a Lunar eclipse(Isan people call Frog eats a moon), the villagers always knocked a wood, fired their guns and firecrackers, causing a deafening sound to startle the frog to reveal the moon. When the rain did not fall in season, the villagers and monks performed a ceremony to pray for rainfall by making a small pool of water and duckweed and brought frogs, snaked-head fish, and toads into the pond for 3 days and 3 nights. If the situation was not better, they would pray for 7 days and 7 nights. They believed that during performing the ceremony if either of the frogs or toads cried out, the rain would fall soon.
