New measures for the wellness industry

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Thailand’s government has taken swift, drastic measures to ensure the safety of everyone. The government abruptly ordered massage shops, spas, gyms and many other related businesses to shut temporarily and this led to a huge burden on the health & wellness industry.

According to the Thai government, an estimate of 150,000 massage therapists has applied for unemployment assistance. In June 2020, stricter measures and rules were put in place to allow massage spas to re-open and operate under the ‘new normal’. It was stipulated that massage therapists must wash their hands regularly before and after treatment, wear a mask and/or face shield during treatment and they have to ensure that all equipment or treatment rooms are cleaned regularly and sanitized.

The Drop-In The Number Of Clients

With travel plans temporarily on hold, the number of potential clients has dropped drastically as well. The government has plans to allow a limited number of tourists to enter the country and their focus seems to be on the more affluent ones. This can be inferred that only the more luxurious spas will benefit from the new measures in place, while the smaller massage parlours struggle to keep their doors open.

Additionally, the economic crisis has put a major constraint on the locals trying to make ends meet and the last thing on their mind would be to book a massage. Subsequently, many people may avoid going to the spas or getting a massage for fear of contracting the virus.
