The Ministry of Public Health in Thailand estimates that there are more than 10,000 massage outlets all across the country with approximately 550,000 Thais directly employed in the wellness industry. There is no doubt about the importance of the massage and spa industry in Thailand.

New measures for the wellness industry

Since the beginning of the pandemic, Thailand’s government has taken swift, drastic measures to ensure the safety of everyone. The government abruptly ordered massage shops, spas, gyms and many other related businesses to shut temporarily and this led to a huge burden on the health & wellness industry.

According to the Thai government, an estimate of 150,000 massage therapists has applied for unemployment assistance. In June 2020, stricter measures and rules were put in place to allow massage spas to re-open and operate under the ‘new normal’. It was stipulated that massage therapists must wash their hands regularly before and after treatment, wear a mask and/or face shield during treatment and they have to ensure that all equipment or treatment rooms are cleaned regularly and sanitized.

The Drop-In The Number Of Clients

With travel plans temporarily on hold, the number of potential clients has dropped drastically as well. The government has plans to allow a limited number of tourists to enter the country and their focus seems to be on the more affluent ones. This can be inferred that only the more luxurious spas will benefit from the new measures in place, while the smaller massage parlours struggle to keep their doors open.

Additionally, the economic crisis has put a major constraint on the locals trying to make ends meet and the last thing on their mind would be to book a massage. Subsequently, many people may avoid going to the spas or getting a massage for fear of contracting the virus.

The Solution: Mobile Massage

What is the difference between mobile massage vs spas or regular massage shops?

Most people decide to go to a spa because they want to pamper themselves and be immersed in that calming ambience and relaxing smell. However, in order for spas or massage places to maintain a level of hygiene and cleanliness, sanitisers and disinfectants are often used to clean frequently used surfaces and the smell may be quite off-putting for clients. Also, going out to public places like spas or massage shops could put people at a higher risk of contracting the virus even though there are temperature checks at these places. Research has shown that there are still a lot of people who are walking around asymptomatic and don’t even realize that they may be unwell.

As a result, a mobile massage could be a solution to this problem. Clients would be able to enjoy a massage from the comfort of their home without having to worry that they are sharing the space with other strangers. They would be able to make bookings easily online or via an application, with a click of a button, they are able to select their preferred massage type and request for the therapist to arrive at a time that is convenient for them. Additionally, health guidelines imposed in spas and massage shops are also strictly followed by mobile therapists. They are routinely checked for any symptoms and frequently practice good hygiene. Therefore, the risk would be much lower as compared to being in a public location like spas or massage shops.
