The Network for Religious and Traditional Peacemakers, an international organisation connecting grassroots religious and traditional peacemakers, is organising its Final Conference on FoRB (freedom of religion or belief) Policy and Practice on June 8 and 9th 2021, at 19:00 – 21:00 Indochina Time (GMT+7:00) via a virtual event platform that will work in conjunction with Zoom. The Network is hosting the Final Conference as the capstone event to the European Union-funded consortium project “Southeast Asia: Advancing Inter-Religious Dialogue and Freedom of Religion or Belief”‘ (SEA-AIR).

The SEA-AIR project aims to contribute to an improved consensus and a conducive environment for the protection of FoRB and for a peaceful coexistence of groups and individuals with different religious affiliations in Southeast Asia. The Final Conference will convene policy makers, UN representatives, and peacebuilders from across South and Southeast Asia to showcase grassroots and regional peacebuilding initiatives, discuss contributions to the Sustainable Development Goals, and present regional policy recommendations.

The Final Conference will include the following:

  • Opening remarks from European Union and Network representatives

  • Keynote Address from Alice Wairimu Nderitu, United Nations Special Adviser on the Prevention of Genocide to United Nations Secretary General António Guterres

  • Panel on the State of FoRB featuring Dr. Ahmed Shaheed, UN Special Rapporteur on Freedom of Religion or Belief, Prof. Dr. Azza Karam, Secretary General of Religions for Peace, and Venerable Napan Santibhaddo Thawornbanjob, Founder and Director, Institute of Buddhist Management for Peace and Happiness

  • SEA-AIR Grant Stories featuring interactive sessions with the SEA-AIR Interfaith Fellows presenting on their community projects

  • Discussion on the Sustainable Development Goals and SEA-AIR Policy Recommendations
