EXPLORE YOGYAKARTANi Wayan Giri Adnyani, primary secretary of the Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy, explained that apart from being one of the super-priority destinations, Yogyakarta has been picked to host the event as the city has the facilities and capacity to host the TRAVEX.

Indonesia’s Ministry of Tourism and Creative Economy (MoTCE) has earmarked Yogyakarta as the host city for ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) 2023 from the date of 15 – 16 January 2023. The 2020 event was held in Brunei Darussalam, the 2021 event was cancelled, the 2022 event was organized in Cambodia, and 2023 will be held in Yogyakarta – Indonesia. Sandiaga Uno, Minister of tourism and creative economy said the city was chosen over other more established and accessible destinations like Jakarta and Bali in order to showcase Borobudur, which has been identified as one of Indonesia’s Super Priority Destinations.

ATF is one of the most significant annual tourism promotional events in Asia and is hosted on a rotational basis among the ASEAN member countries. We hope that ATF 2023 will (create) momentum for the national and regional recovery (of the country post-pandemic), he added.

He said Yogyakarta is ready for major events, thanks to the new Yogyakarta International Airport and suitable facilities. 2019 was held in Vietnam (following alphabetical order). As well, Borobudur and the latest development around the area will attract not only Buddhist communities from Thailand, Laos and Cambodia but also buyers from around the globe.

For 2018 – the hosting country was Thailand. Yogyakarta has seen many infrastructural developments since it last hosted ATF in back to 2002.
