Chatrium Grand Bangkok, the inaugural edition of Chatrium Hospitality’s enhanced luxury collection, has engaged with some of Thailand’s most exciting artists and designers as it prepares to introduce a new era of contemporary Thai hospitality to Bangkok. The newly built twin-tower five-star hotel and residence, opening in the fourth quarter of this year, has been brought to life by acclaimed architect Robert Philip Holmes and Bangkok-based global design studio, DWP, in a sensitive re-interpretation of traditional motifs, symbols and patterns that are deeply representative of Thai culture – and in doing so paying homage to the history and heritage of the nation.

The result is a tour de force of contemporary interior art and design, a re-purposing of heritage and traditions and the reimagining of a destination, that will immerse guests in the heart and soul of Siamese culture.

Upon arrival at Chatrium Grand Bangkok, guests will be enveloped in an ambience of grace and glamour in the lobby, with polished marble floors and gold walls. This contrasts with a feature wall of

handcrafted textiles – a juxtaposition of textures and tones that reflects the changing face of Thailand while also embracing tones that symbolize progress, elegance and the destination itself.

The rippling, flowing effect of the wall represents the fluid movements of Khlong Saen Saeb, one of Bangkok’s most iconic canals, which has carried people and produce through the heart of the city for centuries. Overlooked by the hotel, this evocative waterway harks back to an era when Bangkok was known as the “Venice of the East”.

Thailand’s time-honoured arts and crafts are also reawakened through the dramatic interior installations and wall art. Weaving has been an important aspect of the Kingdom’s trade and culture since ancient times, and elegant lighting features by Korakot Aromdee, the acclaimed Bangkok-based sculptor and designer, appear to float in the air like ribbons of fabric blown by the wind.

Jim Thompson, the legendary silk trader, lived steps from the site of Chatrium Grand Bangkok and this connection has been honoured with the use of a silk fabric pattern. Notably a vivid world of contours and colours greets guests as a signature piece of art by Ploenchan Vinyaratn connecting the world of ancient Siamese crafts with modern art, and Pongsatat Uaiklang, who took inspiration from lotus flowers to design the peaceful artwork that adorns the bedheads in each of the 582 rooms and suites.

Moreover, contemporary artist and sculptor Jathuporn “Yui” Wongtong, a graduate from Thailand’s famed Silapakorn University, introduces a sense of irreverence and intrigue with art pieces in the rooms and public areas to further compliment the creative pastiche of the hotel and residence.

“The location of Chatrium Grand Bangkok is at the centre of Bangkok and next to Sraphatum Palace, so we tried to create an overall ‘Splendid Thai’ theme with an abundance of Thai culture. We used

luxurious and warm tones and signature pieces of art, like the chada and phum khoa bin patterns, refined with the touch of gold and marble texture,” revealed Scott Whittaker, CEO of DWP.

Chatrium Grand Bangkok will be an urban retreat true to Chatrium’s brand promise of “Feel the Remarkable”. Guests will be able to soak up the spirit of Thai hospitality with lavish accommodation that ranges from spacious 46sqm rooms to a 321sqm penthouse, and cosmopolitan gastronomy at Savio, the “Krungthep fusion” themed restaurant with Asian-inspired interiors, and Casia, which showcases classic French-Mediterranean flavours with a contemporary twist.

A magnificent 40-metre swimming pool, bright kids’ club, fully-equipped fitness centre and soothing spa by THANN Wellness Sanctuary, with its innovative salt therapy and oxygen treatment rooms, will provide myriad ways to unwind, and business professionals can take advantage of impressive function spaces, including a pillar-free Grand Ballroom with a striking LED wall.

Scheduled to welcome the world from November 2022, Chatrium Grand Bangkok is owned by City Realty, the real estate arm of the Sophonpanich family, with investment in the project totalling THB 5.5 billion (approx. USD 150 million).
