อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน ตั้งอยู่ระหว่างเส้นละติจูดที่ 8 องศา 28ลิปดาถึง 9 องศา 15 ลิปดาเหนือ ตัดกับลองติจูดที่ 97 องศา ถึง 97 องศา 50 ลิปดาตะวันออก ในทะเลอันดามัน มหาสมุทรอินเดีย ที่ตั้งของอุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน อยู่ห่างจากท่าเทียบเรือทับละมุ อำเภอท้ายเหมือง จังหวัดพังงา ประมาณ 70 กิโลเมตร และห่างจากท่าเทียบเรือหาดป่าตอง อำเภอกะทู้ จังหวัดภูเก็ต ประมาณ 90 กิโลเมตร เกาะเมียงหรือเกาะสี่เป็นที่ตั้ง
อุทยานแห่งชาติหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน Mu Ko Similan National Park
“สิมิลัน” เป็นภาษายาวี หรือมลายู แปลว่า “เก้า” จึงมีชื่อเรียกกันว่า หมู่เกาะสิมิลัน หรือเกาะเก้า ประกอบไปด้วยเกาะใหญ่น้อย 9 เกาะด้วยกัน เกาะทั้งเก้าเรียงตัวตามแนวทิศเหนือไปทิศใต้ ได้แก่ เกาะบอน เกาะบางู เกาะสิมิลัน เกาะปายู เกาะห้า เกาะเมียง เกาะปาหยัน เกาะปายัง และเกาะหูยง
หมู่เกาะสิมิลัน ได้รับการประกาศจัดตั้งเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติของประเทศไทย ลำดับที่ 43 ในปี พ.ศ. 2525 มีขนาดพื้นที่ 128 ตารางกิโลเมตร (80,000 ไร่) และในปี 2541 ได้ผนวกพื้นที่บริเวณ “เกาะตาชัย” เพิ่มอีก 12 ตารางกิโลเมตร เข้าเป็นอุทยานแห่งชาติครอบคลุมพื้นที่เกาะและห้วงน้ำทะเลรอบเกาะที่มีปะการังสมบูรณ์ ในท้องที่เกาะพระทอง อำเภอคุระบุรี จังหวัดพังงา รวมเป็นเนื้อที่ประมาณ 140 ตารางกิโลเมตร (87,500 ไร่) พื้นที่เกาะซึ่งเป็นที่ดินมีประมาณ 26 ตารางกิโลเมตร (16,250 ไร่) ชายฝั่งทะเลในหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน เป็นส่วนภาคตะวันออกของทะเลอันดามัน ในมหาสมุทรอินเดียที่มีการลดตัวลงของพื้นทะเล(SUBMERGENT SHORELINE) จึงมีการกัดเซาะพังทลายโดยมีน้ำทะเลเป็นตัวกระทำอย่างรุนแรงทำให้บริเวณเกาะทั้ง 9 เกาะ เกิดเป็นลักษณะภูมิประเทศที่แปลกตา มีรูปร่างต่าง ๆ อันเป็นผลจากขบวนการกัดเซาะ สำหรับหินที่พบในหมู่เกาะสิมิลัน ทั้ง 9 เกาะ เป็นหินอัคนีชนิด granite อายุของหินนี้อยู่ระหว่างยุค Tertiary – cretaceous ประมาณ 65 ล้านปีที่ผ่านมา
Similan is a Yawi or Malay word, which means nine or a Group of nine islands. This is located in Tambon Ko Phra Thong, Amphoe Khura Buri, occupying an area of 32,000 acres. It was declared a national park on 1st September 1982.
One of the best islands in Thailand named "Similan Islands" which is listed in the world ranking of top ten of the most beautiful islands is like underwater heaven full of beauty from colorful corals, fish and rare dolphins. Meanwhile, beaches on the shores are surrounded by soft and delicate sand. Everyone who has visited Similan Islands must go to Island 8 to take a photo with sailing rock which is the symbol of Mu Ko Similan national park like it is the important landmark to let everyone know that you have been to Mu Ko Similan. Mu Ko Similan National Park is situated in Pang-Nga province. The work Similan is Malaya language meaning nine. Mu Ko Similan is a small Group of islands in Andaman Sea.
There are 9 islands from the north to the south which are: 1. Ko Huyong which has the longest beach in 9 islands. It is also the spot where sea turtles lay their eggs. 2. Ko Payang 3. Ko Payan *Surrounding areas of Island 1, 2, 3 or Ko Huyong, Ko Payang and Ko Payan are reserved to be the place where sea turtles lay eggs. Tourists are definitely not allowed to enter the island. 4.-5. Ko Meang which is the two islands connected to each other. It is where the office of the National Park is located. Rare hairy leg mountain crabs and Nicobar pigeons can be found here. There are 2 beautiful beaches. 6. Ko Payoo 7. Ko Hua Kalok is the islands that looks like skull. There are giant whipray, corals and underwater valley. 8. Ko Similan is the largest island. It offers both snorkeling and scuba diving to see corals and fish. The viewpoint is sailing rock. 9. Ko Ba-ngu is the diving area to see rocks underwater and Christmas Point rock pile.
Later on Ta Chai Island has been included in Similan Islands. Ko Ta Chai is a very beautiful island with white sand beach suitable for swimming. Rare hairy leg mountain crabs can also be seen here. Travelling Season Opening and closing times for travelling season annually are: - Closed from 16th May-31st October in every year - Open from 1st November-15th May in every year The most appropriate period for travelling is between November and April.
