The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) has not issued a Travel Health Notice for Tonga due to COVID-19, indicating an unknown level of COVID-19 in the country.  Your risk of contracting COVID-19 and developing severe symptoms may be lower if you are fully vaccinated with an FDA authorized vaccine. On January 15, 2022, a partially underwater volcano in Tonga erupted. The CDC has issued a Level 3 Travel Health Notice due to heavy ashfall, which caused significant damage across the island. In addition, the eruption led to tsunamis (a series of enormous waves created by an underwater disturbance), causing further damage in Tonga and affecting other destinations in the South Pacific.
